What is Laser RCT?

Laser RCT is an advanced approach to root canal treatment where the procedure is undertaken through laser. A dental laser is used to clean and disinfect the root canal system, removing infected tissue and bacteria while preserving healthy tissue.

The laser penetrates deep into the pulp canal, removing the debris and infection. Laser RCT is faster than the traditional RCT but also results in a faster healing time but it is not recommended for every tooth.

When Should You Go for Laser RCT?

Laser RCT may be recommended for patients who require root canal therapy but prefer a less invasive approach. It may be particularly beneficial for patients with anxiety, low pain threshold and for the patients who wish to go for single sitting RCT. Laser RCT may also be recommended for cases where traditional root canal therapy has been unsuccessful or where the tooth has complex anatomy that is difficult to access with traditional methods. Your dentist can determine if laser RCT is the right option for you.

Classic Signs You Should go For Laser RCT

Severe tooth pain

A persistent tooth pain and sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures may be a sign of a severe tooth infection. Laser RCT can effectively remove infected pulp and bacteria.

Swelling or tenderness in the gums

If there is an extraoral or an intraoral swelling, it may be a sign of an abscess or infection. Laser RCT of the infected tooth can help eliminate the infection and prevent further complications.

Unsuccessful traditional root canal therapy

If you have previously undergone traditional root canal therapy but continue to experience symptoms, laser RCT may be a viable alternative.

Low pain threshold or dental anxiety

People with low pain threshold or anxiety about dental procedures may be more comfortable with less invasive options compared to traditional root canal therapy.

Complex tooth anatomy

If the affected tooth has complex anatomy and a root that is difficult to access with hand files, laser RCT may be helpful.

Procedure of Laser RCT

The first step is the assessment of the tooth and whether the tooth is healthy enough to undergo laser RCT procedure. Once the assessment is done, the dentist will start with the procedure

  • Anesthesia: Before starting with the treatment, the dentist will administer local anesthesia to numb the affected area.
  • Accessing the root canal: They will then create an opening in the top of the tooth to access the root canal system and the pulp chamber (the inner part of the tooth)
  • Laser cleaning and disinfection: Once the access cavity is prepared, the dental laser is used to clean and disinfect the root canal system, removing infected tissue and bacteria.
  • Filling the root canal: After the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and shaped, the dentist will fill the canals with a biocompatible material known as Gutta Percha to prevent future infections.
  • Sealing the tooth: The dentist will then seal the tooth with a temporary tooth color filling before placing the permanent restoration and the crown.
